# Cash Flow Survival Analysis
## When to Use
- Assessing short-term solvency and bankruptcy risk
- Understanding why profitable companies may fail
- Evaluating company survival capability
- Comparing accounting profit vs. cash reality
## Core Principle
**Cash is the absolute necessity for business survival.**
Accounting profit ≠ Cash available for operations
## The Survival Reality
### Profit Independence from Survival
- Companies can survive long-term without profit
- **Example**: Amazon operated with negative or zero profit for 20 years
- **Result**: Continued providing quality service, stock rose ~200x (1997-2014), ~1400x (by 2020)
### Cash Absolute Necessity
- Cash is the hard currency for operations
- Profit cannot substitute for cash in any payment scenario
## Stakeholder Payment Logic
**No stakeholder accepts "profit" as payment:**
- **Employees**: Will not accept "profit" as wages
- **Suppliers**: Will not accept "profit" for goods
- **Creditors**: Will not leave with "profit"
- **Landlords**: Will not accept "profit" for rent
## Survival Time Rule
**Critical Standard**:
> "A company without cash cannot survive past 8:20 PM tonight."
## Case Study: Lehman Brothers
### Background
- 150+ year history
- Wall Street veteran investment bank
- Nearly $700 billion in book assets
### Key Event
- September 14, 2008: Failed to raise $20 billion in cash
### Result
- September 15, 2008: Collapsed and declared bankruptcy
- Triggered a global financial crisis
## Key Insight
**Cash flow is the critical indicator for company survival.**
- Importance exceeds book profit
- Determines immediate viability
- No cash = no survival, regardless of profit or assets
## Application
When analyzing companies:
1. Prioritize cash flow over profit for survival assessment
2. Monitor cash burn rate and runway
3. Assess liquidity position regularly
4. Understand that profitable companies can still fail from cash shortages
