# Self-Cultivation Methodology

## When to Use
- Practitioners of self-cultivation need a structured path
- Learning progress stalls or feels insufficient
- Experiencing symptoms of 'distress' (stuck) or 'forgetfulness' (losing focus)
- Will is weakening due to lack of peer support
- Clarifying the true definition of learning and practice
- Understanding the basis of self-cultivation

## Establish the Foundation: Establishing Will (Li Zhi)

### Core Principle
The 'crucial head' (大头脑) of all learning is 'Establishing Will' (立志). This is the foundation of daily effort (Gongfu).

### Diagnose Common Faults
Symptoms of distress (feeling stuck/tired) and forgetfulness (losing focus) are caused by Will lacking 'trueness' (genuineness).

### Self-Recognition: The Itch Analogy
- You must know your own pain and itch
- You must scratch your own itch yourself
- This is the 'Skillful Means' (方便法门)

### Practice in Isolation
When friends or companions are absent:
- **Quiet Sitting** (静坐)
- **Reading** (看书)
- **Meditative Pacing/Walking** (游衍经行)
- **Mindful Engagement**: Use whatever catches the eye or where the body rests (寓目措身)

### Self-Reliance
You must 'adjust and balance' (调停斟酌) your own state. No external person can provide this force.

## Understand the True Definition of Learning and Practice

### Definition of Learning
Learning is NOT merely 'imitating what sages did' (external seeking).

**Learning IS**: 'removing human desire and preserving heavenly principle'.

### Process of Learning
To successfully remove desire and preserve principle:
1. Consult and correct oneself according to sages (Zheng Zhu Xian Jue)
2. Verify against ancient teachings (Kao Zhu Gu Xun)
3. Perform specific mental efforts: Asking, Discussing, Thinking, Reflecting, Overcoming (Wen Bian Si Suo Cun Xing Ke Zhi)

All efforts are means to the single end: removing desire and preserving principle.

### Definition of Practice (Xi)
- **Sit like a corpse** (Zuo Ru Shi): Practicing the mind (cultivating the heart) while sitting
- **Stand like fasting** (Li Ru Zhai): Practicing the mind while standing

### Definition of Joy (Yue)
Joy is the state where 'Principle and Righteousness delight my heart.'

## Progressive Methodology: Stage-Based Application

### Stage 1: Beginner - Restless Mind
**Condition**: Mind restless like 'monkey' (心猿意马), thoughts focus on human desires

**Apply**: **Quiet Sitting (静坐)** to cease thoughts

### Stage 2: Intermediate - Settled Mind
**Condition**: Mind slightly settled, but sitting like 'dead wood or ashes' (槁木死灰) with no use

**Apply**: **Self-Examination and Conquering (省察克治)**

#### Practice of Self-Examination and Conquering
**Continuity**: Must be continuous without interruption, like removing thieves with intent to 'sweep and clear' (扫除廓清)

**During Idle Time**: Systematically search for and expose selfish desires:
- Lust for beauty
- Greed for goods
- Desire for fame

Pull up the disease root so it never arises again.

**Vigilance**: Maintain alertness constantly, like a 'cat catching a mouse' (如猫之捕鼠)—eyes watching, ears listening

**Immediate Action**: The moment a selfish thought moves or arises, remove it immediately

**Attitude**: Be decisive and firm ('cut nails and break iron' / 斩钉截铁)
- Do not accommodate the desire
- Do not hide it
- Do not give it a way out

### Stage 3: Advanced - Purified Mind
**When**: No selfishness left to conquer

**Result**: Naturally enter state of **'Duan Gong'** (端拱 - sitting with dignity and ease)

### Advanced Level: What to Think and Worry About
**He Si He Lü** (What to think, what to worry about) is NOT for beginners.

**For Beginners**: Think about 'Examining and Conquering' = 'Thinking of Sincerity' (Si Cheng). Focus only on Heavenly Principle (Tianli).

**When**: Heavenly Principle is pure and complete → You reach the state of 'What to think, what to worry about.'

## Mechanism of Joy
- Human heart naturally likes principle and righteousness, just as eyes naturally like color and ears naturally like sound
- Unhappiness arises only when heart is covered/burdened by human desire
- **As human desire is removed daily** → Principle and righteousness permeate heart daily → **Natural joy results**

## Understand Internal Foundations

### Nature of 'Thinking' (He Si He Lv)
- Does NOT mean 'no thinking and no worrying'
- It means all thoughts and worries should be focused **solely on Heavenly Principle (Tian Li)**, with no other distracting thoughts
- Substance of mind is Heavenly Principle—originally silent and motionless, yet responsive when stimulated
- Scholars' work (even 'thousands of thoughts') is to **restore this original substance and function**
- For Sages: this state is natural
- For Scholars: requires strenuous effort

### Sage's Atmosphere
- Do NOT attempt to recognize Sage's 'atmosphere' externally as if observing a distinct object
- Without recognizing your own **Innate Knowing (Liangzhi)**, trying to see the Sage is like:
  - 'Using a scale without markings to weigh weight'
  - 'Using an unpolished mirror to reflect beauty'
- **If you clearly recognize your own Innate Knowing**, the Sage's atmosphere is found within yourself, not in the Sage

### Unity of Nature and Qi
- 'Life is called Nature' implies that 'Qi' (Material Force) is 'Nature'
- State 'above life and stillness' cannot be spoken of
- Once 'Qi is Nature' is mentioned, it has fallen into one specific aspect—not the original source
- **Mencius' theory** ('Nature is Good') is spoken from perspective of the origin
- Manifestations of nature (Compassion, Shame, Deference, Right/Wrong) are Qi
- **If you see your own nature clearly**: 'Qi is Nature' and 'Nature is Qi'—there is originally no distinction

## Practical Application
1. **Assessment**: Determine practitioner's stage (restless, settled, or purified) to apply appropriate method
2. **Will Building**: When facing distress or forgetfulness, focus on making will 'true' like lust
3. **Daily Practice**: Use cat-catching-mouse vigilance to remove selfish desires immediately
4. **Learning Redefinition**: Frame all learning activities as removing human desire and preserving heavenly principle
5. **Self-Reliance**: In isolation, use quiet sitting and reading to nurture will
